UK: The British chain of Indian restaurants Dishoom is expanding into overnight stays with the launch of Permit Room Lodgings, opening June 2025 above its new Permit Room dining venue on Portobello Road, London.

The project is a collaboration between Dishoom and design studio Macaulay Sinclair.

Located on the top floor of the three-level venue, the Lodgings offer two en-suite bedrooms and a separate living room, with a design that aims to blend Bombay heritage with Notting Hill style.

Shamil and Kavi Thakrar, co-founders of Dishoom and Permit Room, said: “Selfishly, we’re so excited to finally have a Permit Room in London. I think you’ll see us perched at the bar, sipping Orange Wine Margaritas more often than we’d like to admit.

“When we began thinking about our Portobello Permit Room, we kept coming back to wanting to keep things rooted in Bombay, and the warmth that envelops you the moment you arrive there. What if we could transport our guests to a romantic Bombay residence? These feelings of nostalgia and looking after people to the best of our ability led us to come up with our Permit Room Lodgings.”

The interiors feature arched windows, parquet floors, antique Bombay furnishings, and finishes in brass, marble and timber.

Beds are king-sized, and bathrooms are stocked with amenities from Mauli Rituals. Guests can help themselves to a bespoke drinks cabinet, complimentary chai delivered from the bar downstairs, and browse curated magazines and vinyls from local shops such as Rough Trade West and Books for Cooks.

Permit Room Lodgings also offers a breakfast in bed service and a personalised guide to London created by the Dishoom team.

Artwork throughout the Lodgings and the first-floor dining room has been curated in partnership with Rajiv Menon Contemporary, a Los Angeles-based gallery promoting South Asian artists including Mustafa Mohsin, Ahsan Javaid and Maya Varadaraj.

Menon said: “Art should be permeating the larger culture and finding new points of connection. Through this partnership, we’re able to bring some of the world’s most exciting young South Asian artists into an accessible, vivacious environment.”

The Permit Room Lodgings are available for a two night minimum stay, seven night maximum.

Highlights:

• Dishoom has introduced its first overnight stay concept with Permit Room Lodgings in Notting Hill.

• It offers two en-suite bedrooms designed by Macaulay Sinclair.

• Design features include vintage Indian furnishings, curated South Asian art, and bespoke services such as breakfast in bed.

• Accommodation is available to book for a two night minimum stay, seven night maximum.
