Hilton has opened Canopy by Hilton Cape Town Longkloof, the brand’s first hotel in South Africa. The 154-room property is located in Longkloof, a historic Cape Town district recently revitalized with new retail, office and tech spaces. The hotel includes Ongetem, a restaurant and bar led by South African chef Bertus Basson.
“Introducing Canopy to South Africa is a meaningful step for our brand. Cape Town’s vibrant culture, creative energy and culinary richness align beautifully with our commitment to offering locally inspired stays,” said Jenna Hackett, global lifestyle category leader, Hilton. “At Canopy Cape Town, guests will find thoughtful design, a strong connection to the neighbourhood, and experiences that reflect the city’s dynamic spirit, from the bold flavours of Ongetem to the curated art throughout the hotel. This opening represents our continued focus on growing in destinations that celebrate community, creativity and a sense of place.”
The hotel is situated in the City Bowl area, 10 minutes from Table Mountain and the Cape Town International Convention Centre. Guests have access to complimentary Canopy Bikes and are encouraged to explore local sites such as Camps Bay, Clifton, Signal Hill, the Museum Precinct and the V&A Waterfront.
Ongetem, the hotel’s signature dining outlet, offers “a fresh and fearless energy to the city’s dining scene.” The menu features flame-grilled meats, pastries and cocktails with local botanicals. The space is described as “a gathering place for locals and guests alike” and reflects Basson’s “Butcher, Baker, Cocktail Maker” philosophy.
The hotel’s design preserves the original red-brick façade and includes natural light-filled public areas. Guest rooms feature a canopy over the bed with South African prints and a mix of artisan furnishings and local artwork. The building is more than a century old and was adapted to reflect Longkloof’s history.
“South Africa saw nearly nine million visitors in 2024 and offers travellers beautiful tourist attractions, vibrant culture and outstanding dining. Hilton has enjoyed a presence in South Africa for more than three decades, and this new opening represents a significant milestone for us in a country where we continue to see great opportunity,” said Guy Hutchinson, president, Middle East & Africa, Hilton. “We are delighted to debut Canopy and look forward to welcoming guests to Cape Town to experience a locally inspired, and welcoming stay.”
The property is part of the Hilton Honors loyalty program and joins Hilton’s seven existing hotels in South Africa. Three additional properties are currently under development.
