Across all locations Chipotle has rolled out produce slicers —freeing up employees for other tasks and improving prep accuracy and consistency. Now, it’s phasing in a high-efficiency equipment package that includes a dual-sided plancha, three-pan rice cooker and high-capacity fryer. These additions are designed to optimize throughput and ensure consistent product quality while improving the employee experience.
The new equipment will be live in 60 catering pilot locations and all new restaurants opening in Q4. Boatright estimates a full chain-wide rollout will take about three years.
Catering Pilot
Catering pilot stores will also feature a new technology stack designed to load-balance orders across nearby units and support operational consistency during peak demand. A targeted marketing campaign will support the pilot.
With catering contributing just 1–2% of sales—compared to peers at 5–10%—Chipotle sees potential to grow this revenue stream.
“Our goal is to scale the catering business within our restaurants without disrupting the core operations…We think this could be a big opportunity longer term,” Boatright explained.
