The Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin will begin an extensive guestroom refurbishment in October, a year after marking its 200th anniversary. The year-long renovation will be led by Bryan O’Sullivan Studio and will focus on preserving the hotel’s historical character while updating its interiors for a new era.

The five-star property, which first opened in 1824, has been owned by Archer Hotel Capital B.V. since 2024. The project, representing an investment of over €50 million, will include a full redesign of 226 rooms across three categories: Queen, Deluxe and Heritage Premium.

“The Shelbourne is a historically important building — not just for Dublin, but for Ireland,” said Bryan O’Sullivan, whose studio has previously worked on Claridge’s, The Connaught and The Berkeley in London. “From the beginning, we have approached this project with an aspiration to honour the legacy of the building and to craft a guest experience that feels authentic, timeless and grounded in place.”

According to the design team, the new interiors will draw from a classic luxury style, with references to the early 19th century, when the hotel was built. Alongside traditional detailing, the design will include playful and eclectic elements inspired by modern Dublin, as well as draw inspiration from Irish artists and cultural institutions, including carpets referencing the work of Louis le Brocquy.

“It has been a privilege to escort this great lady through her two hundredth year,” said JP Kavanagh, general manager of The Shelbourne. “With the owners’ investment, it will preserve the hotel’s legacy while further enhancing our offering. The next chapter in the significant history of this beloved Dublin landmark is being written with elegance and intention.”

Located in a landmark building on the north side of St Stephen’s Green, the hotel is surrounded by some of the city’s best-known landmarks, historical and cultural sites and shopping areas.
