  1. As Denmark assumed the Presidency of the Council of the EU on 1 July 2025, what are the key priorities and initiatives to support the growth and resilience of Europe’s tourism and hospitality sector?

The Danish Presidency takes place at a crucial time for the EU. The EU finds itself in a new international order, marked by uncertainty, global strategic and economic competition and a rising level of conflict. This requires a stronger EU with a clear and defined global role. A stronger sense of European identity is on the rise and during our presidency, Denmark will work to promote a resilient and competitive European tourism industry. It must be economically viable while growing in harmony with local communities and the environment. In Denmark, the tourism industry is the fourth biggest export industry. Tourism creates jobs in our urban and rural areas and the Danish government is dedicated to foster good conditions for tourism businesses, also at a European level.

  1. Given the importance of sustainability and digital transformation, how does the Danish Presidency intend to support SMEs in the hospitality industry in implementing the green and digital transitions?

The Danish presidency welcomes the European Commissions’ coming EU strategy for sustainable tourism that is planned to be launched in 2026. Furthermore, the Danish presidency supports the European Commissions’ initiative to launch targeted consultations to gather stakeholder input for the strategy. It is important that the strategy meets the needs of the tourism sector, including the SMEs. During the Danish presidency, we look forward to continuing the dialogue with the Commission, Member States and other key stakeholders, e.g. in the Council Tourism Working Party, to discuss potential future measures.

  1. Labour shortages and skills development remain pressing challenges for the hospitality sector. What actions or policy discussions does the Danish Presidency foresee at EU level to help address these workforce-related issues?

The question primarily lies within the policy field of the Danish Minister for Employment, Ms Ane Halsboe-Jørgensen. However, in general it is important that the European tourism sector continues to create jobs in our cities and rural areas. And it is essential to maintain focus on the agenda to ensure that the sector remains resilient and competitive in the future.
