Kirklees Council has approved updated plans for the redevelopment of Huddersfield’s George Hotel, increasing the number of rooms from 91 to 108 while maintaining the building’s architectural heritage.

The council submitted revised proposals in April following discussions with architects and Historic England, identifying an opportunity to expand capacity and improve the hotel’s commercial viability.

Once complete, the Grade II-listed hotel will feature a bar, restaurant, gym and conference facilities. It will be operated under the Radisson Red brand.

The scheme forms part of wider regeneration and investment activity across the town centre, including The Light at Kingsgate, improvements to New Street and St Peter’s Gardens, and the Our Cultural Heart project.

External investment projects, such as the University of Huddersfield’s National Health Innovation Campus and the Transpennine Route Upgrade, are also expected to boost visitor numbers to the area.

Councillor Graham Turner, cabinet member for finance and regeneration, said: “The approval marked another major milestone in the Huddersfield Blueprint regeneration programme.

“The George Hotel is one of the town’s most recognisable landmarks and occupies a key position overlooking St George’s Square. Its redevelopment will support the local economy and strengthen Huddersfield’s visitor offer.”
