Retail entrepreneur George Davies has opened a boutique hotel and restaurant in the Cotswold village of Broadway. The House of George occupies a restored 17th-Century limestone building that once housed the local doctor’s surgery. The 10-bedroom property has been converted into a small hotel combining period features with contemporary design. Davies, known for founding fashion brands including Next, George at Asda and Per Una at Marks and Spencer, developed the project with his wife, Arlene.

At its centre is Moda, a 30-cover restaurant led by head chef James Wilson, formerly of The Newt in Somerset. Moda marks Wilson’s first solo opening, offering a nine-course tasting menu that changes with seasonal ingredients supplied by local producers.

Dishes for autumn include Cornish lobster with dill and lobster butter sauce, duck with boudin noir and squash, and a sea buckthorn and white chocolate dessert. A vegan tasting menu featuring foraged and plant-based dishes is also available. Lunch and à la carte menus will be served Monday to Friday, priced from £40 for two courses.

On Sundays, the restaurant will serve roast lunches using meat from Martins Meats in Toddington and vegetables from Worcester Produce in the Vale of Evesham.

Wilson said the launch was an opportunity to bring “a confident, ingredient-led style of cooking” to Broadway, drawing on his experience in kitchens across the UK and Scandinavia.

The property also includes a bar, a lounge known as the Snug, and a private dining room for up to ten guests. The cocktail menu references milestones from George Davies’s retail career, with drinks such as The 1981, a blend of vodka, gin, rum, tequila and Earl Grey syrup.

The hotel’s design was led by Arlene Davies in collaboration with Laura Cole of The Cole Collective. The interior features British-made furnishings, including hand-printed fabrics by Rapture and Wright, joinery by Cotswood Fine Furniture, and artwork from The Stratford Gallery.

Arlene Davies said: “House of George isn’t just about luxury. It’s about connection – to our guests, our neighbours, and this extraordinary village we’re proud to call home.”

George Davies added: “It has been both a privilege and a joy to breathe new life into this remarkable building and create something special for Broadway.”
