In the historic heart of Bloomsbury, where the greatest minds of the early 20th century once gathered, Bertrand’s Townhouse is set to make its arrival in Winter 2025/26, transforming three historic Georgian townhouses on Bedford Place into a timeless 43-bedroom luxury boutique hotel.

A Love Letter to Bloomsbury’s Golden Age

Bertrand’s Townhouse serves as a tribute to a constellation of remarkable characters who made Bloomsbury the beating heart of early 20th-century intellectual and artistic life. Named after one of Britain’s most distinguished intellectuals – Bertrand Russell, 3rd Earl Russell (or Bertie, as he was more affectionately known to his friends) – the hotel is full of character and whimsy, synonymous with Bertie’s mischievous nature, sharp wit and inimitable sense of humour. “Most people would sooner die than think; in fact, they do so,” Russell once observed – and it’s this playful irreverence that infuses every corner of Bertrand’s Townhouse.

Interiors thoughtfully honour Bertrand Russell and his wider circle of English artists, writers, and intellectuals who lived and worked in the Bloomsbury area in the early 20th century – the group known as the Bloomsbury Set.

The result is a combination of thoughtful design touches that make guests feel like welcomed members of an extended, eccentric family. Statement woodwork and marble touches showcase exceptional craftsmanship, alongside a colour palette of rich ochres, vibrant reds and deep indigo blues that flow throughout the hotel to create an air of warmth and cosiness. The hotel blends elegance and a touch of Bloomsbury mischief through whimsical interiors, eclectic art, and thought-provoking details.

Characterful Quarters

Much like the colourful personalities who once called Bedford Place home, each of Bertrand’s Townhouse’s 43 bedrooms will exude character and historic charm. Heritage fixtures such as original cornicing and decorative fireplaces celebrate the building’s storied beginnings, while bold colours and prints, natural wood touches, brass furnishings and unique artwork create cosy sanctuaries for modern day creative spirits. Elegant en-suite bathrooms feature rainfall showers and Diptyque amenities for luxurious daily rituals, while select suites also offer freestanding bathtubs.

Ottie’s Salon

The hotel’s beating heart is Ottie’s Salon, a loving tribute to the Bloomsbury Set’s legendary gatherings that attracted the finest minds of the era. By day, Ottie’s Salon hums with gentle conversation, guests enjoying fresh pastries and morning coffees, or indulging in long, languid lunches from a relaxed all-day dining menu. As evening falls, the space transforms into an intimate speakeasy, complete with jazz music and old-world cocktails, alongside a menu of fine wines and Champagnes.

The Cigar Garden

Inspired by Russell’s well-documented appreciation for tobacco – he once remarked with characteristic wit that smoking had saved his life – The Cigar Garden is an elegant outdoor terrace, blending natural materials such as weathered stone and rich woods, textured botanical patterns and plenty of natural greenery and verdant plantings. Vintage trolley stations house perfectly aged spirits, fine whiskies and a curated selection of cigars, turning this outdoor retreat into a theatrical stage for discerning connoisseurs.

At the Heart of London’s Cultural Quarter

Sitting at the heart of Bloomsbury, Bertrand’s Townhouse places its guests at the epicentre of London’s intellectual and cultural district, where Georgian garden squares sit alongside world-class museums. The British Museum – home to two million years of human history – is just steps from the front door, while the striking Art Deco Senate House provides architectural drama. A short stroll away, the Charles Dickens Museum offers a glimpse into the life of one of England’s greatest storytellers. Bloomsbury’s many independent bookstores allow visitors to delve deeper into the centuries of literary history that is still felt throughout the neighbourhood, while tree-lined Russell Square makes a perfect spot for relaxation around the central fountain and fresh gelato from its iconic Italian cafe.

Bertrand’s Townhouse will open in Winter 2025/26.

Rates at Bertrand’s Townhouse start from £300 per night.
