Six Senses, part of IHG Hotels & Resorts’ Luxury & Lifestyle portfolio, has announced the development of Six Senses Comporta in Portugal and is scheduled to open in 2028. Located within the Pinheirinho coastal estate, the new resort will feature a 70-key hotel, 58 branded residences, a spa, and extensive wellness facilities. The project, in collaboration with VIC Properties, adheres to strict sustainability and design guidelines.

Coastal location and natural surroundings

Set within a 400-hectare estate that was previously privately owned, the resort will be surrounded by pine forests, lakes, and sand dunes, with direct access to a long Atlantic beach. The architectural design embraces the natural contours of the landscape, creating a setting that enhances the connection between guests and their surroundings.

Accommodations and residential options

The resort will offer 66 deluxe guest rooms and suites, along with three garden villas and a presidential villa. The 58 branded residences, ranging from two to five-bedroom villas and apartments, will be divided into three categories—Forest, Sand Dune, and Lake—each designed to reflect its surroundings. Residences will incorporate biophilic design principles to maximize natural light, fresh air, and organic materials.

“Our design approach is about creating spaces that connect people to nature as part of our overall hospitality ethos. Where better to start than by embracing the land’s natural contours of pine forests and sand dunes while drawing on quirks of Comporta, traditions of the Alentejo region, reinterpretation of Portuguese classics, and Six Senses touches that show that luxury doesn’t have to be taken too seriously.” – Neil Jacobs,  CEO of Six Senses

Wellness and sustainability initiatives

A key feature of Six Senses Comporta will be the Path of Life, a sculptural pathway designed for mindful walking and personal reflection. The resort will include a dedicated children’s area with Grow With Six Senses activities, an Earth Lab for sustainability workshops, and a focus on eliminating single-use plastics and harmful chemicals.

The Six Senses Spa will be integrated into the pine forest, offering a blend of high-touch and high-tech wellness treatments. Facilities will include an indoor/outdoor pool, hydrotherapy, a yoga studio, and an Alchemy Bar where guests can create natural spa products.

Dining and culinary offerings

Dining venues will highlight local and seasonal ingredients. The main restaurant will focus on farm-to-table cuisine, complemented by a poolside grill and al fresco dining options. A wine bar will showcase regional wines, while a deli café and market will offer fresh produce for guests. The Chef’s Table, located within the vegetable garden, will host pop-up events and culinary workshops.

“We are thrilled and honoured to welcome Six Senses to our property in Comporta, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter, reflecting our shared commitment to preserving the rich heritage of this beautiful region. Together we envisioned building a lasting legacy, one that not only respects the land, but also ensures a sustainable future for the estate for generations to come. This is just the start of a journey rooted in respect, authenticity, and connection. We look forward to sharing this unique destination with the world.” – João Cabaça, co-founder and CEO of VIC Properties

Activities and outdoor experiences

Guests will have access to a wide range of outdoor activities, including kitesurfing, horseback riding, and an 18-hole golf course. A sports center will provide additional family-friendly activities, while the surrounding natural environment invites relaxed exploration on foot or by bicycle.

Expanding Six Senses’ presence in Portugal

Six Senses Comporta will join IHG Hotels & Resorts’ growing Luxury & Lifestyle portfolio, which includes nearly 100 hotels in Europe. The resort is part of IHG’s expansion in Portugal, alongside 24 open properties and 13 in development, including Kimpton Atlântico Algarve and Kimpton Lisbon
