Sage Hospitality Group will assume management of the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colo., the hotel that inspired the Stephen King horror classic “The Shining.”

The deal is a partnership with the Colorado Educational and Cultural Facilities Authority (CECFA), which purchased the property through its subsidiary, The Stanley Partnership for Art Culture and Education LLC.

The 68-acre hotel joins Sage’s portfolio of leisure-focused properties, which includes Perry Lane in Savannah, Ga., One Ocean Resort in Florida, the Lodge at Sonoma, Hotel Alpenrock in Breckenridge, Colo., and the Asbury Collection in New Jersey. The Stanley, built in 1909, includes 191 rooms across several buildings: the original main hotel, the Lodge and the Aspire wing.

“The Stanley Hotel represents everything we look for in a landmark property: a rich history, innovative programming, and deep community connections. We see so much opportunity and look forward to creating memorable guest experiences,” said Daniel del Olmo, president and co-CEO of Sage Hospitality Group. “We are honored to be entrusted with preserving and elevating this Colorado treasure. Guided by our vision to redefine how the world experiences hospitality, we will let this commitment drive our efforts to elevate and amplify the impact of this iconic destination.”

CECFA, created by the Colorado General Assembly in 1981, expects the deal to generate $45 million in the next 36 years. The hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a member of Historic Hotels of America.

“In selecting Sage Hospitality Group, we found a partner who shares our vision for preserving The Stanley’s legacy and embracing innovation. Their experience with leisure properties around the U.S., and historic properties such as The Oxford in Denver, earned our trust. This collaboration ensures that The Stanley will continue to be a Colorado destination for generations to come. Through this partnership, we expect to generate $45 million over the next 36 years in support of CECFA’s mission,” said Mark Heller, executive director for CECFA.

Under former owner John W. Cullen IV, the hotel gained popularity for inspiring Stephen King’s “The Shining.” Cullen will continue to serve as chairman and CEO of SPACE, leading future projects including a hotel expansion, the annual Sundance Institute Labs and a horror film museum and event center developed with Blumhouse.

The property includes Cascades Restaurant, the Whiskey Bar, a wellness center, a spa, Stanley Live venue and 25,000 square feet of meeting space. Year-round programming includes outdoor activities in partnership with local guides.
