McAfee’s 2025 report reveals why younger travelers are falling for sophisticated online fraud—and how to stay safe this summer

As Americans look for affordable ways to enjoy summer travel amid rising costs, a new McAfee report warns that scammers are capitalizing on this bargain-hunting mindset—particularly among young adults. The 2025 Safer Summer Travel Report reveals that while most travelers do try to protect themselves by researching scams in advance, many still fall victim to increasingly sophisticated fraud tactics like fake booking sites, AI-altered images, and phony confirmations. With one in five Americans reporting scam experiences while booking travel, vigilance is more critical than ever.

  • Events heighten risk: 30% of travelers heading to major events (e.g. sports) are especially susceptible due to urgency and ticket scarcity; 60% of them fear being scammed.
  • Third-party booking trust remains high: Despite known risks, 59% still trust third-party booking sites equally to direct bookings.
