Credit card companies and retailers have a golden opportunity as 82% of travelers eye using non-travel points for affordable, customizable getaways

Jul 9, 2025

A new report from Expedia reveals a growing appetite among consumers to use loyalty points—especially those from non-travel programs—to book vacations. A striking 82% of travelers say they’re interested in doing so, with 43% “extremely interested.” This presents a major opportunity for credit card companies and retailers to partner with travel brands and capitalize on this demand, especially as consumers tighten budgets in response to inflation.

Key takeaways

  • High interest in point redemption for travel: 82% of consumers want to use non-travel loyalty points to book vacations; 43% are extremely interested.
  • Loyalty opportunity for credit cards & retailers: While travel sites like Expedia remain a top choice, travelers also favor booking through credit card or retail platforms that offer familiar travel brand integrations.
  • Customization and affordability matter: 57% of travelers prioritize customizable, flexible, and affordable travel packages. Discounted packages were the most attractive type of offer, with 50% saying they’re appealing.
  • Pop culture influences travel decisions: 32% of travelers get vacation inspiration from TV or movies. Partnerships like Amex’s White Lotus-inspired travel packages demonstrate how cultural relevance can boost engagement.
  • Implications for loyalty strategy: With 83% of cardholders preferring to redeem points on travel over cash back, issuers should build compelling, curated vacation packages to drive spending and card usage in a cautious economic climate.
