The former Cambria Hotel Washington, D.C. Convention Center has reopened as Hyatt House Washington DC Downtown Convention Center. The conversion is part of a mega-trend in hospitality, where global lodging companies seek to expand in ways other than ground-up development, which has become onerous and expensive from the debt and construction side.
The 184-room, extended-stay hotel at 899 O Street NW is located close to the the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in D.C.’s Shaw neighborhood.
The hotel was developed by Frontier Development & Hospitality Group, in partnership with Basis Investment Group. Donohoe Hospitality was selected as operator.
It joins Hyatt House Washington DC/The Wharf as the other Hyatt House in the city.
“We’re thrilled to introduce the second Hyatt House to the neighbors of my hometown, Washington D.C., and to visitors attending events at the Convention Center,” said Evens Charles, founder and CEO of Frontier Development & Hospitality Group. “This project reflects our commitment to investing in communities that embody culture, creativity, and forward momentum. We see a clear need for thoughtful design and extended-stay accommodations in DC and we cannot wait to open an exciting new rooftop destination later this fall. We are proud to be a part of this exciting, continued evolution in Shaw – helping shape its future while honoring its rich cultural roots.”
The property will debut a 157-seat rooftop bar and lounge this fall. The venue will feature small plates, craft cocktails and 360-degree views of the D.C. skyline.
The hotel opens under the leadership of Donte Johnson, area general manager for Donohoe.
“Donte grew up in this neighborhood and he understands how much we are invested in this community. I am excited to work with the team to create a space where visitors can live like locals, whether they are staying for a few days or a month,” said Thomas Penny, president of Donohoe Hospitality Services.
The hotel is integrated into the World of Hyatt loyalty program, allowing members to earn and redeem points.
