The second property in The La Darbia Collection is a meticulous transformation of an 11th-century hamlet, reimagined by Studio Primatesta as a serene luxury hotel amid the rolling Tuscan countryside

An avenue of ancient pine trees leads to La Darbia in Chianti, a new 17-suite hilltop hotel by Italian architect brothers Gian Carlo and Matteo Primatesta. The 15-hectare estate combines olive groves, meadows, Mediterranean woodland, and lavender fields and sits between Panzano and Greve in Chianti, just 25 minutes from Florence.

An 11th century historic hamlet, ancient stone buildings are nestled among olive trees, others rise on hilltops, each with panoramic views across the Tuscan hills. Centuries-old stone walls have been restored and buildings renovated using local materials to create a sense of place, in harmony with the surrounding hills, olive groves, and lavender fields that shape the estate. Every detail is guided by respect for the environment and Tuscan culture, creating a place where the architecture feels inseparable from the landscape and the rhythm of rural life.

La Darbia in Chianti will comprise 17 suites and apartments all unique in character. Some will have private gardens, kitchenettes, steam baths, or freestanding bathtubs, but every one will have stand out bathrooms and sweeping views. Five will be designed for families.

The estate is organised across two levels, each with its own pool and dedicated parking. The Pine Alley Level gathers suites around a courtyard and tower house, while the Hilltop Level offers spacious suites with private spa facilities and gardens.

The interiors are beautifully simple, natural and light. Local artisans, including woodcutter Flavio Bettio, have contributed to the work, with natural materials – pietra serena, terracotta, travertine, and wood – setting the foundation. The colour palette is earthy and serene, designed to let light, landscape, and texture take the lead. The result is a balance of heritage and contemporary design, with the Tuscan hills framed in every room.

The restaurant, led by Executive Chef Matteo Monfrinotti, will highlight Tuscan cuisine through seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. With 40 seats indoors and 60 outdoors, the dining space looks across lavender fields toward Panzano, echoing the lake views at sister property La Darbia Lago d’Orta.

Set in the municipality of Greve in Chianti, the estate sits amongst Tuscany’s treasures: Florence, the medieval hamlet of Montefioralle, the panoramic terraces of Lamole, Siena, San Gimignano, and the historic villages of the Chianti Classico – Castellina, Radda, Gaiole, and Badia di Passignano. Close by are storied wine estates such as Antinori and Rampolla, the terracotta workshops of Impruneta, and the famed butcher Dario Cecchini.
