Design studio Uchronia has showcased works by British artists, including chairs made from extruded plastic and seafoam-green glass sculptures, in a suite at London’s Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park for Frieze Art Fair.

The suite, which comprises a bedroom, bathroom and lounge, is decorated in the hotel’s signature celadon-green shade, developed with colour specialist Pantone.

It is designed by Uchronia to have an underwater feel and will be available for guests to stay in for the next two months.

“We’ve been invited by Mandarin Oriental to reinterpret their colour, which is a colour that they developed with Pantone,” Uchronia founder Julien Sebban told Dezeen.

“It’s this celadon green from which we decided to create an underwater world, because it reminded us of those really beautiful greens that you can see under the sea.”

Uchronia wanted the hotel interior to also showcase British craftsmanship and worked with a number of UK studios to create original pieces for the suite.

“What we wanted to do is to highlight British crafts by working with amazing British people to create some very fun pieces,” Sebban said.

Among the designs on display are moire fabrics by Govindia Hemphill created to resemble dripping water, as well as curtains that nod to coral formations.

“The curtains are this idea of coral and this really fun, weird underwater world,” added Sebban.

The bedroom also features furniture made from extruded plastic by designer James Shaw and a flower lamp designed by Uchronia.

In the lounge, a desk made from resin and a bench designed to resemble corals decorate the space, while the bathroom has glassware designed by glass artist Jochen Holz.

“We really wanted to show that the tradition of Mandarin Oriental can be highlighted, with the modernity that we try to bring in a very joyful way,” Sebban concluded.

The design of the suite was unveiled at the start of this week ahead of the London edition of the annual Frieze Art Fair.

Uchronia, which was named emerging interior designer of the year at Dezeen Awards 2023, have also recently given London store Koibird a colourful overhaul and designed a French cafe to be “halfway between Paris and Seoul”.

Frieze London runs from 15 to 19 October 2025. See Dezeen Events Guide for an up-to-date list of architecture and design events taking place around the world.
