IHG Hotels and Resorts has signed an agreement with Tristar Austria to open the first Kimpton hotel in Austria, marking the brand’s entry into the country’s luxury lifestyle market.
The 119-room Kimpton Salzburg is due to open in mid-2028 as part of a wider redevelopment project led by Midstad. The site will include high-end retail units and shops alongside the hotel, which is set to feature river views, a wellness area and meeting spaces.
Located on the banks of the Salzach River, the hotel will offer access to transport links and Salzburg’s cultural quarter, home to major landmarks and festivals. Facilities will include 11 suites, a fitness centre with sauna and relaxation rooms, and a range of spaces for events and gatherings.
Willemijn Geels, vice president of development for Europe at IHG Hotels and Resorts, said: “We are excited to expand our presence in the luxury and lifestyle market in Austria with the opening of Kimpton Salzburg, complementing our recently opened Kimpton Main Frankfurt.
“As Austria’s second-largest hospitality market after Vienna, Salzburg offers a compelling opportunity for the Kimpton brand to establish a presence.”
According to managing director of Tristar Austria Christina Locher, the project represents “the brand’s exciting debut in Austria” and Tristar’s first luxury collaboration with IHG.
Founded in 1981 by US hotelier Bill Kimpton, the Kimpton brand is known for its distinctive design and personalised approach to hospitality. The Salzburg hotel will join IHG’s portfolio of 12 open Kimpton hotels in Europe and six more in development.
Across the DACH region – Germany, Austria and Switzerland – IHG has more than 210 hotels open and 63 in the pipeline. In Austria, the group currently operates 14 hotels under brands including InterContinental, Hotel Indigo, voco, Ruby Hotels, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express and Garner.
