Meliá Hotels International is set to add a location in Argentina. The Spanish hotel company has partnered with Grupo Mirgor to develop a luxury hotel in Ushuaia under the Gran Meliá luxury brand.
The property, which represents an investment of more than $50 million, is expected to open in 2028 and will be the southernmost property in Meliá’s global portfolio. Meliá Hotels will manage the hotel, which is being developed by Grupo Mirgor.
The hotel will feature 200 rooms, two restaurants, a bar, lobby bar, an auditorium with a capacity for 800 people, indoor and outdoor pools, a spa, gym and other common spaces like a gazebo and a winter garden.
“This is a project that was created from a collaborative vision and having Meliá Hotels International involved in it is a fundamental milestone,” said José Luis Alonso, CEO of Grupo Mirgor. “We are committed to expanding the economy of Tierra del Fuego. To this end, we believe in integrating capacities and efforts to develop projects that align with this goal.”
The hotel is part of the diversification strategy of Argentina-based Grupo Mirgor to expand the productive matrix of Tierra del Fuego, the southernmost province in Argentina.
Emphasizing the strategic significance of Meliá Hotels’ partnership with Grupo Mirgor, Gabriel Escarrer Jaume, chairman and CEO of Meliá Hotels said the group sees great potential in Argentina, following its expansion plan in the LATAM region.
It is important that the private sector chooses to invest in Tierra del Fuego, said Governor of Tierra del Fuego, Gustavo Melella. “Undoubtedly, having a hotel of such characteristics will boost tourism… From the government, we accompany those investments that have as their axis the development and growth of Tierra del Fuego. This initiative is a sample of what the expansion of the productive matrix allows us and what it entails for our economy.”
The project is expected to create approximately 200 jobs during its development.
Meliá Hotels currently operates four hotels in Argentina, including Gran Meliá Iguazú. In October 2024, the company added the Almarena Puerto Retiro and the Almarena Madero Urbano under the Affiliated by Meliá brand.
Founded in 1956, Palmade Mallorca-based Meliá Hotels has more than 400 hotels open or in the process of opening across 40 countries and a portfolio of 10 brands.
