Minor Hotels is set to introduce its NH Collection brand to Spain’s Balearic Islands, with the opening of NH Collection Ibiza in April. Formerly known as the Sir Joan, the hotel was recently acquired by AX Partners and will undergo a renovation to meet the upper-upscale brand’s standards before relaunching this spring.

Following a refurbishment in 2017, the current renovation will upgrade the hotel’s facilities and services, including a revamped dining experience with a new restaurant and cocktail offerings.

Overlooking the port of Ibiza and old town, the hotel is positioned as a luxury hotel.

“The introduction of NH Collection into the Balearic Islands tourism market represents a key strategic flag for the brand. It will allow us to position ourselves with an asset that will strengthen both our presence in Spain as a whole and our offering in a key location for our main outbound markets in the rest of Europe,” said Gonzalo Aguilar, CEO of Minor Hotels Europe & Americas. “It is also a significant milestone that coincides with the tenth anniversary of our NH Collection brand, which has established itself as a benchmark of quality around the world.”

The Sir Joan is already a benchmark in design and location in Ibiza and its acquisition is expected to boost its success with a benchmark brand and a stronger contract, Minor said.

“We have chosen NH Collection because of its solvency and capacity to manage premium hotels in iconic destinations, maximizing the efficiency of its hotels, as well as its expertise in successfully managing leisure and restaurant offerings. This project will not only strengthen Ibiza’s hotel offering but will also mark a milestone as the first NH Collection in the Balearic Islands. We are committed to adding value to this asset and to consolidating our position as one of the main players in the hotel investment market in Spain,” said Aleix Recasens, founding partner of AX Partners.

The Ibiza launch follows the brand’s upcoming opening of NH Collection Alagna Mirtillo Rosso in Italy in March. Located in the Pennine Alps in the village of Alagna Valsesia, the four-star hotel caters to skiing enthusiasts. Together, these openings will bolster NH Collection’s portfolio as the brand celebrates its 10th anniversary, now nearing 100 properties globally.

With this move, Minor Hotels continues its expansion into key European destinations, reinforcing NH Collection’s presence in the region’s luxury hospitality market. Currently, NH Collection has around 100 hotels in Europe and the Americas and a growing presence in destinations such as the U.A.E., the Maldives and Sri Lanka.
