Radisson RED has launched a hotel in central Oslo, Norway, that it says is one of the first two in the world to achieve verified net zero status.

Radisson RED Oslo City Centre has been certified as meeting the 2040 requirements of the Net Zero Methodology for Hotels, verified by third-party body TÜV Rheinland. The company said it forms part of Radisson Hotel Group’s wider goal to reach net zero by 2050.

The 118-room hotel is housed in a building dating back to 1939, which has been extensively renovated to meet net zero requirements. The conversion marks the second such hotel in the group’s portfolio, following the opening of a verified net zero property in Manchester earlier this year.

The hotel is powered entirely by renewable energy, with electricity and heating sourced through Oslo’s district heating system, which uses waste treatment and data centre heat recovery.

Efforts to cut emissions include low-carbon menus, plastic-free guest amenities, and waste reduction tools such as food waste tracking software and digital check-in systems. The hotel also partners with climate-focused organisations including Klimato and Too Good To Go, and offsets remaining emissions through carbon removal certificates from regenerative farming initiatives.

Inge Huijbrechts, chief sustainability and security officer at Radisson Hotel Group, said: “Pioneering the first two Verified Net Zero hotels is a significant milestone for Radisson Hotel Group. By transforming hotels in operation to Verified Net Zero status, we are demonstrating that Net Zero conversion hotels are not only possible, they are essential.”

Tom Flanagan Karttunen, chief operating officer for leased hotels at Radisson Hotel Group, added: “Radisson RED Oslo City Centre demonstrates that energy-efficient transformations are possible for existing buildings. We aim to provide memorable experiences that support guests’ expectations for responsible stays.”

Located near the Oslo Opera House, the Munch Museum and other city landmarks, the hotel includes six meeting rooms, a gym, restaurant and bar.
