Lamington Group’s first white paper, The Emergence of the Conscious Traveller, has been published, showing that 88% of travellers now factor sustainability into their travel bookings, with millennials and Gen Z at the forefront of this change. Lamington Group, a B-Corp and the forward-thinking hospitality company behind room2 hometels, is setting a new standard in sustainable travel – meeting the needs of the modern traveller who is conscious, values-led and willing to spend more on ethical experiences. The white paper features case studies and examples of best-in-class sustainability initiatives from hospitality companies worldwide, as well as Lamington’s own insights and how the group delivers on these demands. In brief, these are:
Guests demand more than greenwashing
Sustainability must be transparent, measurable and authentic. Guests are seeking credible, transparent commitments backed by evidence, such as third-party certifications, data-led results, and open reporting.
- Lamington publishes a detailed, annual Sustainability Report and GHG Emissions Report, ensuring consistent transparency and helping to raise standards across the industry.
- Carbon footprint per night is shown on room2’s website.
- On average, room2 hometels emit 61% less carbon per night than a typical UK hotel.
Farm-to-fork dining
Guests want seasonal, local and low-impact food and drink that support community and wellbeing. Lamington found that by embracing farm-to-fork principles, hotels can transform food and beverage offerings into an immersive, values-driven experience.
- Lamington’s room2 hometels are home to Winnie’s Cafe & Bar, which promotes seasonal ingredients sourced by local suppliers. room2 Chiswick also offers zero-waste cocktails.
- Ingredient sourcing is clearly communicated to guests, reinforcing trust and guest engagement.
Waste is an opportunity
The global hotel industry generates up to 289,700 tonnes of plastic waste annually, and Lamington Group is aiming to show that waste should be seen as an opportunity rather than an issue.
- At room2 hometels, single-use plastics have been almost entirely eliminated from operations – guests are provided with refillable toiletries, cutlery and kitchenware in rooms, a reusable milk bottle, and a market bag to reduce disposable packaging.
- The team created a welcome desk for room2 Belfast, made from used shampoo bottles in the Chiswick, Hammersmith and Southampton sites. Additional features include carpets made from recycled fishing nets and lampshades made from orange peels.
