Macdonald Hotels and Resorts has reported a 10% rise in coffee sales across its 32 UK sites over the past year.

The hospitality group said it prepared more than 737,000 cups of coffee in the 12 months to September, reflecting the growing popularity of flat whites, cappuccinos and espressos among guests.

Founded in 1990, Macdonald Hotels and Resorts operates hotels and resorts across the UK and Spain. It has focused recent investment on food and beverage services, including barista training and the use of sustainable coffee blends.

As part of its sourcing strategy, the group works with Suffolk-based supplier Paddy and Scott’s on a direct trade scheme that funds meals in coffee-growing regions. Through the partnership, 361,500 cups served in its venues have so far helped provide more than 8,100 school meals in Meru, Kenya. The initiative is expected to reach 12,160 meals by the end of the year.

Kimberly Ofrecio, group commercial director at Macdonald Hotels and Resorts, said: “Coffee is an essential part of modern hospitality, and as a leading independent hotel group, we take pride in delivering quality that rivals the high street.

“The 10% rise in coffee sales shows just how important it has become to our guests, from early-morning espressos to post-dinner pick-me-ups. Through our work with Paddy and Scott’s, we’re also able to turn this growing demand into something more meaningful, supporting children and communities in coffee-growing regions around the world.”
