What duopoly? Seriously hotel distribution isn’t a duopoly at all – according to these numbers there isn’t a duopoly at all. Booking is very very much alone as the main leader of OTAs.
I don’t want to call it a monopoly as I have seen the numbers that the team at 10 Minutes Hotel are working on and there are hundreds of OTAs out there, in various niches and regions. Some are surprisingly big.
But according to this data – Airbnb is not even 10% of Booking’s volume. HotelTonight which belongs to Airbnb is lower than Leading Hotels of the World on the table. There’s really one leader here and that is Booking.
Will AI change everything here? This is the one place where AI really can make a huge difference. But I’m not sure OTAs will give up their positions easily. Just like Amazon isn’t ready to give up theirs.
