Strathmore Golf Centre near Alyth in Perthshire has reinstated plans for a hotel and holiday lodges as its long-term owners prepare to sell the site for an asking price of more than £1.65m.
The 79-hectare course, which hosted the PGA National Fourball Championship earlier this year – the first time the event had been held in Scotland since 1989 – has been owned and operated for two decades by business partners David Norman and Peter and Simon Howell.
The property had previously secured outline planning permission for a 30-bed sporting lodge, 34 self-catering chalets and an expanded clubhouse. That consent has since lapsed, but Norman said the proposals could be “readily revived”.
Set between Blairgowrie and the Angus border, Strathmore offers two courses – the 18-hole, par-72 Rannaleroch course and the nine-hole Leitfie Links – alongside a 10-bay floodlit driving range, practice facilities and a restaurant.
Norman Howell said: “It’s known that we are ultimately looking to sell the centre in preparation to retire. A luxury staycation resort could easily be created here, with chalet-style lodges easy to site.
“As we have had outline planning granted for this before, which has now lapsed, it would not be at all difficult for a new owner to apply and achieve it again. The proposals were detailed and well thought out. It’s the type of development that would be very much welcomed, creating much needed visitor accommodation, generating jobs and revenue throughout the area, whilst continuing to put Alyth on the map as yet another beautiful Perthshire destination.”
He added: “Plenty of staycation resorts have a golf course as part of their offering. However, Strathmore Golf Course isn’t just another course – it has achieved PGA Championship Course status and is, in the words of many PGA professionals, a hidden gem.”
