Casa de los Bates, a 19th Century manor house overlooking the Costa Tropical in southern Spain, has been brought to market for €5.3m (£4.6m), with approval in place to expand it into a 70-room hotel.
Located in Motril, Granada, the property currently operates as a nine-suite country hotel. The property’s redevelopment plans would turn it into a larger hospitality and events venue, reflecting growing investor interest in southern Spain’s tourism and leisure market.
The Italian-style mansion was built in 1898 by José Jiménez Caballero, then mayor of Motril. The building stands on grounds once part of a fortified agricultural estate of the former kingdom of Al-Andalus. Historical records suggest the site may once have contained dwellings, a mosque, wine presses and mills.
Casa de los Bates has also served as a filming location for the Disney+ adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s Rivals and was named among the five best guest houses in Europe by a London-based publishing house. The venue has hosted weddings, concerts and fashion events.
Set within more than two hectares of gardens connected by a travertine-marble staircase, the property includes orchards of avocado, mango, guava, persimmon, banana and papaya trees.
Motril lies about 34 miles from Granada airport and is the focus of new tourism development plans including a marina, golf course and leisure facilities.
