From the Chihuahua Mountains

  • Isaac French
  • 20 January 2026
🌍 Helen, Lucas (almost 3), Ezra (1), and I are enjoying a unique experience in the Chihuahua mountains. Despite its disadvantages, like harsh lighting, this place enriches our lives, highlighting the value of relationships and service to others. Our agrarian roots influence our journey, reinforcing my dedication to revealing how places shape people. Being here underscores our wealth in experiences, not material possessions, and inspires us to appreciate life's simple, yet profound, lessons.

Why Tesla Might Save Small Towns

  • Isaac French
  • 6 January 2026
🚗 In Deary, Idaho, a new 4-stall Tesla supercharger opened next to The Pie Safe, a family-run artisan bakery. This is one of only three privately-owned superchargers initiated by Tesla in recent months. It is anticipated to break even in 5-6 years, drawing additional traffic to Deary, located two hours from major urban centers. The initiative aims to revitalize rural America, transforming charging stops into local, culturally-rich destinations with amenities like food and lodging.

Do Things That Don’t Scale

  • Isaac French
  • 22 December 2025
🎨 Portraits were created in 2023 as gifts for friends by hand. They reflect the artist's appreciation for friendships, taking hours or days to complete each unique piece. This personal approach contrasts with the efficiency-driven world. At Live Oak Lake, guests received handwritten notes and homemade cookies, highlighting genuine hospitality. Will Guidara’s "Unreasonable Hospitality" discusses such practices. The emphasis is on creating irreplicable, meaningful experiences over scalable, automated ones.

Bring on the Mess!

  • Isaac French
  • 22 December 2025
🎨 In rural Wisconsin, an artist reflects on the transformative power of creating art in personalized spaces. This year involved crafting 20 portraits, leading to a sense of ownership marked by graphite and charcoal smudges. The emphasis is on the value of well-loved spaces with character, as seen in spaces like Morning Glory Farm. Mixing antiques with new elements is key for a vibrant atmosphere. Embrace messiness for authentic creativity.

The Old Farm We’re Restoring

  • Isaac French
  • 19 November 2025
🌼 In the 1960s or 1970s, a century-old farmhouse underwent modernization, hiding its original charm. After removing faux paneling and vinyl siding, original features like floors, beams, and brick were restored. Located at Morning Glory Farm, named for the abundant wildflowers and memorable sunrises, this project saw contributions from the author's brothers and a mural sketch by the author, who was simultaneously working on Live Oak Lake in Texas.
