AG Studio designs Mexican rooftop bar as a “matriarchal universe”

  • Jane Englefield
  • 3 February 2026
🎢 Tonana, a rooftop bar in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, designed by AG Studio, is inspired by ancient goddesses. Located on Casa Hoyos, the bar features crocodile-shaped furniture and tezontle flooring, a red volcanic stone. Andrés Gutiérrez drew on Mexican matriarchal history and Aztec mythology, creating a space celebrating female figures like Tonantzin. Tezontle and marble elements add to the design, with custom furniture crafted by Oaxaca artisans and collaborations with Los Patrones.

“Yearning for authenticity” central to bolder interior design in 2025

  • Jane Englefield
  • 24 January 2025
🏡 Interior design in 2025 leans towards art deco, celebrating statement objects designed to last, shifting from previous minimalism. Dorothée Meilichzon, Dezeen's 2024 interior designer of the year, advocates for dreamy, grand interiors with a twist of old-school design. Designers predict a move beyond monotone and single-material spaces, calling for authenticity and connection. Art deco's 100-year anniversary highlights a focus on quality and sustainability, countering rapid consumption. Localisation of resources is suggested to preserve culture and minimize transport. Designers envision multi-functional spaces and a trend towards personal expression, with an emphasis on craftsmanship and rich textures. Critics suggest the concept of trends is becoming obsolete, as the value of design is in uniqueness and cultural storytelling.
