UK STR sector grows 16 times faster than…

🏡 In the UK, short-term rental businesses have seen a 90.7% increase from 3,780 in 2013 to 7,219 in 2023, growing 16 times faster than hotels, which only grew by 5.6% (from 12,385 to 13,080) over the same period. UK campgrounds also witnessed a 35% rise, from 2,495 in 2013 to 3,375 in 2023. Out of 382 UK local authorities, 260 experienced growth in STRs, with an average of 13.2 new businesses per region, significantly outpacing hotels, which saw growth in just 154 regions, averaging 4.6 new operators.

Expedia Group reveals ‘mass-affluent’ Asian…

📍 Expedia Group's study, conducted with Atomik Research, surveyed 4,000 Asian respondents from China, India, Indonesia, Singapore, and Vietnam, revealing preferences of the mass-affluent middle class, projected to be 3.5 billion by 2030. Mass-affluent travellers plan to spend 23% of their income on travel, with 81% prioritizing it despite inflation. On average, they plan four destinations over ten days for international trips, with Indian travellers aiming for 14-day trips. 72% use platforms like Expedia for bookings with 83% having a travel brand’s app installed. Luxury travel is in demand with 93% seeking premium experiences, including airline upgrades (44%), accommodation upgrades (42%), and booking 4- or 5-star hotels (52%). Loyalty programs are popular, with 86% enrolled in one. Cultural understanding concerns exist, with 49% worried about local practices and 34% willing to pay for language support in hotels.

Dubai welcomed 9.31 million international overnight visitors in H1 2024, a 9% increase from 2023. Dubai Economic Agenda D33 aims to double Dubai's economy in a decade. WTTC predicts a record year for travel and tourism with an economic contribution of $11.1 trillion and 348 million jobs, potentially rising to 449 million by 2033. ATM 2024 saw over 47,000 attendees from 161 countries, a 17.7% increase from the previous year.

🍽️ Marriott Hotels in the UK, Ireland, and Nordics partnered with Winnow AI to reduce food waste by 25% in 53 hotels within six months of 2024. The initiative saved the equivalent of 486 tonnes of CO2 emissions. The London Heathrow Marriott Hotel improved its EPC rating from F to B. The hotel uses solar panels, a windmill, LED lighting, and a CHP Plant to enhance sustainability. It also installed 23 electricity meters for optimal equipment performance and grows garnishes hydroponically. Chefs created dishes using previously discarded ingredients like banana peels.
