🌳 In Singapore's Hougang, L Architects revamped a 98-square-metre flat for plant-loving clients. 🏡 Utilizing 571 rare double-bullnose bricks, they transformed the space, removing two walls to create an open-plan area. 💡 Glass doorways and louvered windows enhance light and ventilation. 🌱 Focusing on plant placement, they designed a multifunctional area with a brick island and bench. The project, shortlisted for the 2025 Dezeen Awards, merges nature with design in a residential interior. 🌿

MuseLAB “abandons all notions of the expected” in Mumbai bathware showroom

  • Tirthika Shah
  • 6 December 2024
🚽 MuseLAB designed the 241-square-metre flagship Sorbet bathware showroom in an upscale Mumbai neighborhood, diverging from traditional showroom interiors. The project, completed in eight months, overran the initial six-month timeline due to high rental space costs. Circular geometry dominates the design, with bulbous mint-green displays, berry-red accents, and custom halo light fixtures contributing to the unique aesthetic. Formerly a rug atelier, the retail space features 12-foot-high walls and a Kota stone flooring pattern in ivory-toned grout. MuseLAB, founded in 2012, has a portfolio that includes various interior and furniture design projects.

Luca Guadagnino transforms Roman palazzo “steeped in history” into boutique hotel

  • Tirthika Shah
  • 10 October 2024
🏠 Film director Luca Guadagnino's Studiolucaguadagnino has transformed a 16th-century palazzo in Rome, Italy into the luxury hotel Palazzo Talia, marking its first hospitality project. The palazzo, once a school for underprivileged children that evolved into an institute for aristocratic students, was closed in 1999 and restored by the Federici family's Gruppo Fresia. Featuring a 248-square-metre Magna Hall with 18th-century frescoes by Gaspare Serenario, the hotel showcases a floral carpet leading to a central staircase. A key design element is "chromaticism," with a focus on color hues and collaboration with artisans. The hotel's Bar della Musa is adorned with blown-mirror panels, and the Terrace Suite offers a 66-square-metre terrace with tropical foliage by landscape artist Blue Mambor. Architect Marianna Lubrano Lavadera and designer Laura Feroldi designed the remaining 25 rooms, blending classic and contemporary styles.

Mirzoyan Studio renovates Stalinist-era flat in Kyiv with oak and stainless steel

  • 26 August 2024
🏡 Mirzoyan Studio renovated a two-bedroom Stalinka apartment in Kyiv, Ukraine, transforming it into a rental property with reflective surfaces and built-in oak furniture. The historical building's structural integrity influenced the careful planning and preservation of its character. The main living space now combines the living room and kitchen, separated by a wooden shelving unit, with stainless steel kitchen finishes. Mirrored closets and broken marble from a local supplier enhance the entryway and bathroom. Despite war-related construction delays and budget cuts, the project emphasized durable design and local materials.

Jakob Sprenger embellishes Aesop store with salvaged plaster medallions

  • Tirthika Shah
  • 3 July 2024
🏠 Austrian architect Jakob Sprenger designed Aesop's skincare store featuring 1920s plaster medallions in Paris' 17th arrondissement. The medallions, dating back to 1923, were from the demolished Hotel de la Guilonniere. The store's layout is based on four 19th-century gypsum ceiling medallions discovered during renovations, arranged around a sculptural sink within a triangular floor plan. The retail space is divided into two sections with the primary area upfront and a burgundy red lacquered billing and checkout nook at the back, harmonized with rounded geometries. Reclaimed French tomette tiles were also incorporated into the flooring. Sprenger, having previously worked on Aesop stores in Rome and Salzburg, emphasizes creating lasting values that resonate with the location's historical and cultural context.
