Philippe Starck reinterprets Brazilian modernism in São Paulo penthouse

🏠 French designer Philippe Starck used local Brazilian materials for the interiors of a 12,000 square-foot penthouse in the Rosewood São Paulo, housed within Jean Nouvel's "vertical garden tower". The luxury suite, offering panoramic views of the city, comfortably sleeps eight. Starck's design features Brazilian modernist elements, including Paraná marble and ipe wood. Artworks and furniture by Brazilian artists such as Oscar Niemeyer enhance the cultural connection. Guests have access to hotel amenities and the penthouse includes a private infinity pool overlooking Avenida Paulista.

Hong Kong’s “love motels” influence Vancouver restaurant by Ste Marie

🍻 Ste Marie designed the Meo cocktail bar and restaurant in Vancouver's Chinatown with a 1970s and '80s Hong Kong theme, featuring pink hues, floral patterns, and red accents. Inspired by photographer Greg Girard, the dimly lit space evokes nostalgia with elements like Guzzini pendant lights and an old-school jukebox. Decor items were thrifted from Taiwan, including a Persian cat portrait and a vinyl mural. Ste Marie has offices in Vancouver and Toronto, and their work includes various hospitality projects.

Milanese modernism informs LA pizzeria interior by Jared Frank Studio

🍕 In LA's Highland Park, Jared Frank Studio designed "Wildcrust," a single-storey pizza parlour inspired by Milan's modernist design. The studio, while working with Chef Miles Okabayashi, moved away from Northeast US aesthetics, embracing contrasting colors, materials, and lighting fixtures reminiscent of Italian design greats. The space features pistachio green cabinets, claret-coloured leather banquettes, and decorative lighting, including sconces shaped like inverted stepped pyramids. Wildcrust marks Frank's first hospitality project since Tenants of the Trees nightclub.

Studio Collective completes The Hotel at The Moore in Miami Design District

🏨 Studio Collective recently opened The Hotel at The Moore in Miami Design District, featuring 13 unique suites on the building's fourth floor, ranging from 700 to 1,000 square feet. The Moore building, completed in 1921, also houses the Elastika restaurant with a Zaha Hadid sculpture since 2005, and a private members club offering various themed dining rooms and lounges. The district continues to evolve with new architecture and boutiques.

Weiszblüth & Brown designs tiny Thai eatery in LA that “packs a punch”

🍴 Holy Basil Market, designed by Weiszblüth & Brown, is a compact Thai restaurant in Los Angeles with a second location in Atwater Village. Occupying just 90 square feet, it boasts 16 seats, emulating the feel of a bustling Bangkok street market. The space features stainless steel counters, small chairs, stools, and flexible tables with vinyl-wrapped tops displaying food imagery. Red baskets are used for storage and can be rearranged as table bases or extra stools. Additional seating is available outside under a neon sign.

Gachot Studios refreshes lounge at The Metropolitan Opera in New York

🎼 New York-based Gachot Studios redesigned The Metropolitan Opera's patrons lounge, the Keebler J Straz Lounge, at Lincoln Center. The 1,861-square-foot space features textured wallpaper, black granite, brass accents, and furniture from Roche Bobois customized for all ages. The studio, founded in 2012, took inspiration from the original designer Billy Baldwin. The project included Elle Décor magazine collaboration and was photographed by William Jess Laird.

Atelier Échelle reimagines Montreal dental clinic with residential vibe

The 90-square-metre clinic includes light wood features, a walnut desk, a white-painted brick fireplace, green velvet benches, and fluted glass panels for privacy. Custom millwork offers storage and display, while a coffered ceiling conceals electromechanical and dental equipment. The clinic is nominated for Dezeen Awards 2024 in the health and well-being interior category.

Soho House opens in historic São Paulo hospital filled with local art and furniture

🏠 Soho House opened its first South American location in São Paulo, taking over a historic building. The members' club includes 32 guest rooms and integrates Brazilian modernism into its design. Local artisans provided furniture and decor, surrounding a central courtyard with a capacity of 68 members and guests. The building features two event spaces, artwork from 60 Brazilian artists, and rooms with locally sourced lighting and furnishings. A future phase in 2025 will add a gym and rooftop pool. Soho House operates 42 locations globally, with the São Paulo outpost part of recent expansions in the Americas.
