Choice’s Everhome Suites breaks ground in three locations

🏠 Choice Hotels International broke ground on three Everhome Suites in San Antonio, Texas; Bowling Green, Ky.; and Wichita, Kan., in partnership with Highside Companies, which has 25 Everhome Suites in its pipeline. The brand currently has four open, 65 planned, and over 20 under construction, aiming to open over 15 in the next 12 months. Everhome Suites Bowling Green, with 115 rooms, will open in November 2025. The equally sized San Antonio suite will also open in November 2025. Meanwhile, the 123-room Wichita suite is set for a fall 2025 opening.

Briefs: Six Senses resort, residences in Telluride; Playa sells Dominican Republic resort

🏖️ IHG Hotels & Resorts is expanding with a Six Senses resort in Telluride, Colo., slated to open in 2028, featuring 77 rooms, 24 residences, and amenities like ski concierge and a spa. Playa Hotels & Resorts will sell the Jewel Palm Beach in Punta Cana for $68 million, expecting the deal to close by Q3. IHG will also open Hotel Indigo Cabal Akhdar Resort & Spa in Oman on September 1 with 173 accommodations. Marriott's Moxy Hotels debuts in Mumbai's Andheri West with a 105-room hotel.

🐶 The AHLA survey in 2016 found 75% of hotels had pet accommodations. Sonesta International Hotels increased its pet-friendly efforts, launching the PAWS program in 2022. My Place Hotels has a pet-friendly standard across all 71 properties since 2012. Sonesta acquired Red Lion Hotels Corp. for $90 million in 2021. The full PAWS program will extend to legacy RLH brands in 2025. JW Marriott Desert Springs in California revised its pet policy in February 2024. Finmasters reported Americans spent $136.8 billion on pets in 2022, with $147 billion expected in 2023, and $150.6 billion anticipated in 2024. Sonesta’s fees include a flat $75 for full-service hotels and a minimum of $75 up to $150 for extended stays. Two dogs up to 50 pounds each are allowed per guestroom at JW Marriott Desert Springs, with a $150 non-refundable fee and a $20 daily fee. No fees for service animals are charged. Some hotel brands, like Motel 6, Red Roof Inn, and Kimpton Hotels, do not charge pet fees at all.

Marriott celebrates its 9,000th property, The St. Regis Longboat Key Resort, boasting 168 rooms, 26 suites, and 69 residences in Longboat Key, Fla. U.S. hotel performance sees mixed year-over-year (YOY) stats with occupancy at 66.9%, ADR at $156.35, and RevPAR at $104.54. Houston leads with occupancy up 34.3%, ADR up 14.5%, and RevPAR up 53.8%. Pennyweight Hotel Boston, Curio Collection by Hilton, with 112 rooms, set to open this month in Boston’s West End.

EMEA hotel industry sees robust performance in H1

🏨 Dubai led in EMEA hotel occupancy at 80.3% and Milan in GOPPAR at €157.28. Doha's GOPPAR grew by 50.1% from H1 2023; Amsterdam's fell by -13.3%. Paris, despite the Summer Olympics, saw drops in occupancy (-3.4%), RevPAR (-2%), and GOPPAR (-9.6%). H1 2024's hotel deal volume was high in Greece, Eastern Europe, France, Spain, and the U.K., with London poised for a record year. Europe's demand surpassed the U.S., with Southern Europe's profitability up by 9% after a 13% increase from 2023. The U.K. Provincial revenue doubled London's growth. Middle East revenue and profit grew over 8% from 2023, with U.A.E. and Saudi Arabia's profit margin up over 8 points since 2019. Covivio acquired a €500 million stake in Covivio Hotels, Best Hotel Properties' deal was €347 million, and Ares bought Landsec's U.K. portfolio for £400 million. London's luxury hotel ADR declined from 2023, but occupancy led to similar RevPAR levels in H1 2024.

Universal Helios Grand Hotel to open in Universal Orlando

🌈 In 2025, Universal Orlando Resort will open the 500-room Universal Helios Grand Hotel, a Mediterranean-inspired Loews hotel, at Universal Epic Universe. The hotel will feature a dedicated theme park entrance, entertainment-themed rooms like the How to Train Your Dragon Kids’ Suites, three dining venues, a rooftop lounge with 360-degree views, a zero-entry pool with underwater speakers, and Early Park Admission benefits. Universal Epic Universe will also include multi-sensory environments with five themed worlds. This will bring Universal Orlando's hotel count to 11, totaling 11,000 rooms.

U.S., China lead global hotel construction pipeline to all-time high

🏨 The U.S. and China dominate the global hotel construction pipeline, contributing 64% with the U.S. having 6,095 projects/713,151 rooms and China 3,815 projects/699,786 rooms as of Q2 2024. A record 15,453 hotel projects and 2,395,726 rooms reported worldwide, with 6,265 projects/1,115,989 rooms currently under construction. New hotel openings are slated to reach 2,534 in 2023, 2,756 in 2025, and 2,812 in 2026. Dallas, Atlanta, Chengdu, Shanghai, and Inland Empire, Calif. lead in city pipelines. Upper midscale projects total 4,540/585,688 rooms, upscale 3,688/634,050 rooms, and luxury segment projects up 13% YOY with 1,066/214,270 rooms.

Olympics drive Paris room rates to record numbers

🏆 Paris hotel room rates hit an all-time high during the Summer Olympics (July 26-August 11), with the highest ADR on opening night at €876.26 and RevPAR at €765.85, a 179.3% increase. Over the next four nights, rates remained above €800, marking a 141% YOY surge in ADR and 200% in RevPAR. Occupancy in Paris grew by 24.1%, while Île-de-France peaked at 79.7% on August 3. Paralympics bookings are at 49.7% occupancy. Prior concerns of a disappointing summer due to high prices and overcrowding proved unfounded with 11.2 million visitors reported.

Banyan Group debuts flagship Banyan Tree brand in Japan

🌱 Banyan Group introduced Banyan Tree brand in Kyoto’s Higashiyama Ward, Japan. This luxury hotel, Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto, features 52 rooms, a spa, natural Onsen, and two dining venues. The hotel is close to the UNESCO heritage site Kiyomizu-dera Temple and offers traditional Japanese architecture with modern influences by Kengo Kuma and Yukio Hashimoto. It joins Banyan Group's eight hotels in Japan and forms part of their global portfolio of 80 hotels, targeting to double their footprint by 2025.
