The Great Debate: OTAs, AI, and the End of the 10 Blue Links Era | PA Dispatch No. 10

  • Thomas Reiner
  • 28 January 2026
💻 Last week at Skift Megatrends, Seth Borko, Sarah Kopit, and I discussed AI's impact on travel distribution. OTAs face challenges as AI alters discovery, potentially compressing take rates. U.S. travel agents once numbered 170,000; now, discovery may consolidate to ChatGPT/OpenAI and Google/Gemini. AI risks homogenizing choices, but personalization could counteract this. Independent hotels can now better target customers through AI. While AI simplifies building, it may centralize distribution, leaving OTAs vulnerable to repricing.

OpenAI “App Store”: What it Means for Travel | PA Dispatch No. 3

  • Thomas Reiner
  • 15 October 2025
💻 OTAs accessed via ChatGPT bring real-time pricing from Expedia and Booking without context-switching. Partnering with incumbents avoids data shut-offs. Expedia's 2-minute latency is a conversion issue; faster UX is needed. Current process requires external booking, impacting user flow. ChatGPT's control over information reduces OTA brand visibility, potentially compressing their 10-20% take rate. Low-latency, native payments, and integrated servicing are necessary for seamless transactions. OTAs may see benefits within 12 months, but UX owners are poised to gain long-term advantage.

The Agentic AI Adoption Matrix: Consumer & Travel

  • Thomas Reiner
  • 18 September 2025
🤖 Agentic AI, 2025's buzzword, highlights systems acting on our behalf. Adoption depends on human trust and technical feasibility. Easy wins include low-trust tasks like email drafts. High-trust, complex tasks like managing healthcare require more adoption time. Travel, a $9 trillion industry, exemplifies the challenges with outdated tech. Companies like Layla, OpenAI, and OTAs are tackling these issues. Success hinges on supplier integration, consumer trust, and navigating complexity, with frontier bets holding the potential for substantial market impact.

🍴 In 2024, Toast processed 16% of U.S. restaurant card volume. Cloud disruptors, like Toast, Square, and Lightspeed, now dominate the POS market, once led by legacy vendors NCR Aloha and Oracle Micros. Platforms like DoorDash and Uber Eats command the U.S. delivery market, exceeding $170B TAM. ChatGPT Advanced Voice: The Future of Travel Booking or the End of OTAs?

  • Thomas Reiner
  • 11 October 2024
🏘 ChatGPT offers an Advanced Voice Mode for travel booking, potentially disrupting the industry by integrating features like real-time inventory, pricing, payment rails, and customer interactions. OpenAI could connect to GDS for 40-50% of global hotel inventory and navigate non-GDS inventory, threatening OTA's market hold. OpenAI's conversational AI raises questions about data privacy, trust, and regulatory challenges. OTAs might shift to inventory/supply management, payment processing, or become IT facilitators. Possible scenarios involve OpenAI as a gatekeeper, OTAs maintaining customer loyalty, or OTAs leveraging proprietary data for competitive advantage. Future travel booking may pivot towards AI efficiency, questioning OTA's adaptability and survival.
