Opened just before New York's Pride celebrations, the bar honors the historical 1969 Gay Rights Movement protests. Founders Shigefumi Kabashima and Elias Popa emphasize "no straight lines" in the design. A Marsha P. Johnson quote is displayed on the floor, and a brick from the original Stonewall Inn is featured.

  • Dan Howarth
  • 7 June 2026
🍴 New York-based Islyn Studio, led by designer Ashley Wilkins, created the interiors for Uchi DC, a Japanese restaurant in Washington DC's Dupont Circle. The design draws inspiration from Edward Durell Stone's New Formalist architecture, notably the nearby National Geographic headquarters, and Tokyo's late-night ambiance. Islyn Studio incorporated two-tone wood paneling, clay tiles, and dark stone flooring to echo these influences. The restaurant's spaces each carry unique identities, akin to scenes in a film, enhancing the dining experience.
