The “pay-to-play” model has finally reached its logical, if entirely unappetizing, conclusion in hospitality. We’re being pushed, shoved really, toward a world where the fully prepaid stay is the default rather than the outlier. Imagine booking a fortnight in the sun or a high-stakes business trip six months out and being expected to cough up the entire four-figure sum before you’ve even packed a suitcase. It’s a massive capital transfer from the pockets of the traveler to the balance sheets of the big brands, well and truly before the provider has incurred a single cent of cost to house you.

The industry apologists love to point at the airlines. “Well, the airlines do it,” they shrug. Right. Because the airlines are the gold standard for customer-centric behavior, aren’t they? Just because the flying tin cans have normalized a predatory payment model doesn’t make it the right path for an industry built on the art of the welcome. We’re essentially being asked to provide an interest-free loan to multi-billion dollar organizations.

And where exactly does that money sit during the long lead time to arrival? Escrow? Methinks not. It’s tucked handily into the bank account of one of the many layers of the hospitality cake. You might think the hotel at least sees that liquidity to keep the lights on, but no—they’ll likely get paid only after the guest has consumed the product, often well after departure. Think of the interest being accrued on that gargantuan volume of stagnant funds. There’s a gleeful smile and a frantic hand-rubbing happening in a corporate office somewhere, and it isn’t at the property level.

Then comes the real kicker: the insurance hustle. Now that they’ve got your cash in their vault, you’re badgered to insure the trip just to guarantee you’ll get your own money back if life happens. It’s a bizarre ethical loop. If I don’t receive the product, I shouldn’t have to pay for it—period. But here we are in the land of the skim, and it seems there’s always more skim coming. We’re trading hospitality for a financial maneuver, and I wonder if we’ve considered the cost of the goodwill we’re burning along the way.

Life is so tech. Can I get my money back?
