  • Automatic
  • 22 August 2025
🗺 Aug 22, 2025, US tourism businesses feared a downturn due to Trump's policies. Despite a 4% decline in foreign arrivals, resilient domestic demand, fueled by wealthy travelers and budget-conscious families, steadied the sector. Luxury hotels and cruises thrived, while campsites and RV parks filled up. Mid-market hotels struggled with falling revenue. Nearly 90% of tourist spending was domestic. Analysts warn tariffs and reduced international demand might impact future growth.

Why Are Guests Still Booking with OTAs? A Frank Conversation.

  • Anders Johansson
  • 21 August 2025
💵 Hotel companies face legal challenges against Booking.com over unfair rate clauses and high fees. Despite these disputes, frequent travelers still prefer OTAs. Why? Convenience. OTAs provide streamlined booking, extensive hotel options, loyalty rewards like Hotels.comโ€™s โ€œStay 10 nights, get 1 free,โ€ user-friendly interfaces, and reliable customer support. To regain direct bookings, hotels must improve tech, offer tangible perks (free breakfast, late check-out), and ensure simple rewards, enhancing value over OTAs.

Shafted

  • Mark Fancourt
  • 20 August 2025
🏠 Spain recently removed 60,000 apartments from the rental market to address housing concerns. In Las Vegas, short-term rentals under 30 days are banned, influenced by casino lobbying to curb competition. This affects property owners seeking to rent their assets, as digital platforms face increased scrutiny. The debate centers around balancing property rights against corporate interests, challenging the traditional practice of holiday rentals in the platform economy era.

The $1,000 Farmhouse That Almost Got Bulldozed

  • Isaac French
  • 19 August 2025
🏠 Benny acquired an old house in Mexico for $1,000, initially intended for demolition due to commercial farming plans. The purchase was delayed when a bulldozer broke down. After the original owner's second thoughts, Benny paid an additional $1,000 and signed a final contract. The house was moved several miles to Benny's garden during a family missions trip. This historical acquisition cost less than a junky used car yet holds significant future value.

🗺️ Protests in Venice and Barcelona highlight overtourism issues: crowds, high prices, and short-term rentals displacing locals. While mass tourism has consequences, affordable travel was once a privilege, now more accessible. Critics urge for fewer tourists and higher prices, risking exclusivity rather than sustainability. Issues like unequal profit distribution and insufficient local ownership are systemic, not tourist-driven. Solutions should focus on stronger policies and regulation of big businesses rather than restricting individual behavior.
