Top Chef alum Nelson German embraces more African influences

🍽 Bret Thorn, Nation’s Restaurant News Senior Food & Beverage Editor since 1999, lives in Brooklyn, NY. With a BA in history from Tufts University (1990) and a cooking certificate from Le Cordon Bleu (1986), he served as IFEC president in 2005. Thorn won the 2006 Jesse H. Neal Award and contributed to food encyclopedias in 2012 and 2015. Previously, he wrote for The New York Sun (2005-2008) and lived in Thailand for five years.

Athens’ industrial Voulkanizater restaurant features wheel rims and car parts

🎶 Designers George Vlasis Pakalidis and Artemis Valyraki transformed a former tyre workshop into Voulkanizater, a listening bar and restaurant in Athens' Koukaki neighborhood. Retaining the concrete walls, they added wood and metal elements for warmth and an industrial feel. The "box-in-a-box" design features a metal bar with tyre rims as décor. Vintage tyre company logos influenced the space, with acoustic panels ensuring optimal music listening. The dark color palette merges grey concrete, brown wood, and metal.

Ryanair closes subscription scheme after…
