  • Cynera Rodricks

Unlike a three-year English scheme, this relief is for one year and classified as a subsidy. Hotels, guest houses, and caravan parks are excluded despite facing steep rate increases in 2026. Colliers criticizes this approach for its complexity and limited benefit.

Did you wonder why Marriott-backed Sonder still got so many travelers stranded (both physically and financially) when it defaulted? The real culprit nobody talked about was: a false-positive… | Chris Zhao, CRME

  • Chris Zhao CRME
  • 5 February 2026
💸 Marriott-connected Sonder faced issues when it defaulted, leaving travelers stranded. The problem stemmed from a "false-positive merchant model," where Bonvoy members thought they were booking with Marriott, but legal responsibility lay with the actual properties. Travelers prepaid, assuming safety through the Marriott brand; however, the risk wasn't with Marriott. Many didn't read the terms, emphasizing the importance of understanding merchant models and supplier risks in franchiser-driven hotel networks.
