Melting Aircraft and other Aviation Mysteries

Ah, the excuses. The frantic gate announcements, the vague app notifications, the shrugs from airline staff who’ve clearly been coached to blame everything on the sky. Last week, as the industry attempted to descend on a major event, the entire aviation grid seemingly went into a defensive crouch. Constant delays, phantom cancellations, and a cascading chorus of institutional nonsense.

The official line? The weather. But here’s the thing—people aren’t stupid. In an interconnected world, travelers have networks and connections all over the country. We can see the radar. We can call mates at the destination. We know exactly when we are being fed a lot of unadulterated nonsense. The result of this corporate fiction? A massive portion of our community didn’t get to the event, and a whole lot of others couldn’t get home.

You really do have to question what the fundamental problem is with passenger jets in the United States. It’s as if we’re dealing with the mysterious case of the melting aircraft. The moment a cloud appears or a drop of rain falls, the entire apparatus falls over. Yet, everywhere else in the world, airlines seem to manage the exact same everyday events—events these multi-million-dollar aluminum tubes were explicitly designed to handle—without breaking a sweat.

Instead, the default setting here is to immediately inconvenience the prepaid-in-full traveling public. There is zero consideration for the financial or personal cost to the customer. It’s the ultimate reflection of a protected, unaccountable sector that holds all the cards and handles its operations like a game of musical chairs where the passenger always loses. In hospitality, if we shut the doors every time it drizzled, we’d be out of business by Tuesday.

Life is so tech. But our aviation infrastructure is perpetually grounded in excuses.
