The chatter in the boardrooms lately is the eye-watering, unsustainable cost of running premium Western AI. We’ve all seen the budgets. Monthly API bills from the big US labs are actually outstripping entire payrolls for some operators. It’s a massive, hype-based gouge, and when a business operates on a normal cost-efficiency model, looking to shave down those margins, something has to give.

Which brings us right back to a topic we flagged earlier this year—the sudden, magnetic pull of China-based AI models.

When we first talked about the AI race, I pointed out how quickly the landscape was shifting with the likes of DeepSeek and Qwen. Today, those models aren’t just holding their own; they’ve forced a global price war, offering comparable performance at a fraction of the cost. For any cash-strapped hospitality tech provider or operator trying to automate high-volume guest interactions on a budget, it looks like a total no-brainer. A simple, pragmatic business decision to protect those margins.

But let’s not be naive. This is the ultimate geopolitical bait-and-switch.

Do you honestly reckon Xi Jinping and the planners in Beijing are watching Western enterprises migrate their daily workflows, codebases, and customer interactions to Chinese systems and thinking it’s just a win for global commerce? Please. In the grand geopolitical battle for resources, data is the ultimate prize. If we decide that data governance, privacy, and IP safety are fair trades for a cheaper token rate, we’ve completely lost the plot.

Think about the sheer volume of proprietary operational logic being piped directly into these engines. When the dust settles on this cost-cutting spree, guess where that collective intelligence actually resides? We are handing over a goldmine of strategic intelligence on a silver platter because some finance guy wanted to balance a quarterly spreadsheet. We’ve taken the bait, hook, line, and sinker.

Life is so tech. Can I have my data back?
