Business travel trends 2024: Top destinations, routes, and emerging markets

💸 In 2024, U.S. business travel surged, with Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Chicago leading as top hubs. Texas, California, Georgia, Illinois, and Florida were the most-visited states. Business travelers frequently flew to London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Paris, Munich, Tokyo, and Seoul, with São Paulo as Latin America's top destination. Seven European countries were among the top 10 international destinations. New York City dominated as the primary departure and arrival city domestically and for flights to London and Frankfurt.

Wellness-centric gap years dominate, with 35% of Gen Z prioritizing mental health and relaxation. Bleisure trend merges work and leisure, leading to creative workspaces in Generator locations. Cultural city breaks overtake party destinations, with Rome, Paris, Amsterdam, and Barcelona being top choices; Rome saw a 5.7% booking increase in 2024 over 2023. Social media, especially TikTok, heavily influences travel, with a 50% increase in #solotravel posts in early 2024. Dating apps emerge as travel tools, with 29% of young travelers using them to connect with locals. Generator offers vibrant hubs for connection and memory-making, reflecting the dynamic lifestyles of younger generations.

Barry Sternlicht has brought back Starwood Hotels. Can it recapture its past successes?

🏨 SH Hotels & Resorts rebrands as Starwood Hotels; Barry Sternlicht retains ownership of the name despite Marriott International's 2016 acquisition of original Starwood brands. Starwood, originally a REIT, was acquired by Sternlicht in 1995. 1 Hotels launched in 2015, expanded to multiple cities including Brooklyn and London, with further expansion planned through 2025 in locations such as Seattle, Melbourne, and Copenhagen. Baccarat Hotels opened in New York in 2015 and plans to expand to global destinations including Rome and the Maldives. Treehouse Hotels, starting in London in 2019, aims to open in Manchester, Silicon Valley, and other locations. Starwood Capital, with $115 billion in assets, acquired 10 Edwardian Group hotels in January 2024. A new loyalty program and branded residences are in development, with Baccarat Residences and 1 Homes planned for Dubai, the Maldives, Riyadh, Melbourne, Crete, and San Miguel de Allende.

Marriott International Celebrates Record-Breaking Development Year

🏨 Marriott International announced 291 deals representing over 34,000 rooms in EMEA in 2024, leading to a 7% net rooms growth. The company added 180+ properties and entered Luxembourg, Angola, and Senegal. EMEA pipeline grew to 596 properties with 104,731 rooms, up 10% from the previous year. Denmark, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and the UK had the highest signed deals. Marriott's luxury brands in EMEA will expand to 80+ hotels; Four Points Flex saw 34 signings, and the premium and select service segments also experienced growth. The branded residential segment recorded 11 signings, totaling 72 EMEA locations. Notable openings include Nujuma, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, W Prague, and The St. Regis Al Mouj Muscat Resort.

a&o Hostels reports record growth and expansion in 2024

They expanded with new hostels in Brighton, Antwerp, Brussels, and Florence's a&o Firenze Campo di Marte. The average occupancy rate was 76.6%, and they plan to open a five-story hostel in Heidelberg in late 2026. Group travelers accounted for 38% of guests, 40% of bookings were direct, and 70% of online bookings were through smartphones. The company reduced carbon emissions per overnight stay by 78% over the past decade.

Hilton taps into the luxury market in Paris
