EU Directive Bans Self-Created Eco-Labels for Hotels, Requires Certified Schemes from September 27

  • Automatic
  • 24 July 2026
📈 Twelve AI models over-emphasized eco-certification when selecting hotels, unlike humans who prioritize rating and price. From September 27, 2026, the EU bans self-created sustainability labels; penalties for infringement can reach 4% of turnover. A compliant eco-certification costs €775 annually for 21-100 room hotels, plus auditor fees. Booking.com saw its qualifying properties drop from 500,000 to 16,500 due to stricter regulations. The cost of eco-certification moves it from an earned to an invoiced classification for hotels.
